Moral of the tale

‘Vikings in Herefordshire?’ School Workshop

Thanks to generous funding from HMSSG, the Becket Bulmer Fund and the High Sheriff’s Fund, Herefordshire Museum Service has created a Key Stage 2 (7-11years) outreach workshop based on the contents of the Herefordshire Hoard. It focuses on the themes of trading, raiding and parading. The children investigate a set of Viking/Saxon era artefacts that they compare by value then attempt to swap accordingly. They imagine joining a raiding party, decide what to pack for their voyage and explore the motivations behind raiding. Finally, they discover the background context of some of the objects in the Herefordshire Hoard before they were buried over 1000 years ago. The session also embeds aspects of value based learning particularly relating to the crime surrounding the discovery and concealment of the Hoard. The workshop has been trialled in local schools during the summer term and will be available for schools to book from the autumn.
