VAD hospitals were auxiliary hospitals, managed by the Red Cross, set up often in large private houses all over the country to treat wounded soldiers. Hospitals in Herefordshire included Hampton Court, Sarnesfield, Caradoc Court, Beechwood. Nurses, known as VADs were recruited from local women and given a short training.
