The recent ‘Resilient Heritage’ Report about the Museum’s future, has been produced with Heritage Lottery backing. In the face of reductions in Herefordshire Council’s funding for the Museum Service, this plan provides a roadmap towards an exciting future for our County Museum. The County Collections – thousands of priceless heritage objects – would remain in the care of the Council, on behalf of Herefordshire’s people. A local non-profit Trust would work within a local partnership model to develop staffing, exhibitions, learning and tourism, and also buildings investment. (This is very different from outsourcing or privatising to a profit-making private contractor.)
Herefordshire Museum Service Support Group, a registered membership Charity, has worked with the Council and Museum experts on this plan to develop the Museum. It offers an alternative to the market ‘procurement’ model that’s also currently being considered by the Council.
The Council seems very unlikely to adequately fund the Museum Service so why not adopt this roadmap and start the journey towards new investment into a more vibrant Museum future?
